Manual of Articulatory Phonetics (MOAP) by W.A. Smalley
Website created and maintained by Piet Mertens
About the recordings
The Manual of Articulatory Phonetics contains a unique collection
of audio-recorded exercises. The book is out of print and
the tapes of the exercises that accompanied the book are no
longer being produced.
The sound files of these tapes are made available
for non-commercial educational purposes.
Conditions of use
The copyright of these recordings belongs to Jane Smalley.
Permission to use this material is granted
as long as you agree to the following:
(a) full acknowledgement of their authorship will accompany their use;
(b) you will not sell the copies of the tapes at a profit;
(c) a notice that the audio files may not be further copied
and distributed without the express consent of the copyright owner
accompanies their use.
The tapes were sampled at 16000 Hz, 16 bit resolution, mono, and saved in
Windows uncompressed WAV format.
The files can be played back using standard audio tools such as
Windows Media Player, or Winamp player.
However we recommend using signal editing tools such as
Cool Edit 96,
Audacity,
Praat,
Cool Edit.
The display of the speech wave makes it is easier to position the
cursor at a particular point of the speech signal, e.g. between items of the exercise.
Praat opens very large files very quickly (use Read LongSound).
